Common MIstakes With Online Marketing Strategies

When you first start to promote your online business, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that you need to focus on obtaining targeted traffic.  If you’re good enough you can target your traffic down to a more defined level.  It is a pretty amazing process to see how well this can be done.

In these podcast interviews I’ve listened to, I’ve learned that what we will do is call this targeting, remarketing or retargeting.  When someone comes and visits my website, I immediately cookie them. As they surf around to other websites the banners we have follow them.

It’s really cool to see how this process of retargeting works.  When you concentrate on SEO marketing through the search engines, you can’t get this service unless you have certain pieces of software.  You can find these buy doing a search in the search engines for this.

I’d like for you to think about something that is important.  When you begin your SEO campaign and you climb the ladder of the search engines, they control the amount of traffic they send your way.  They can stop this process at anytime with no notice to you.  I’ve seen this happen with pay-per-click advertising, where they will cancel your account or start to raise your bids.

If they kick you off of their service they do so for life, so make sure you read the rules and regulations.  I don’t think that most people read this stuff, but for you sake it’s a good idea to.  I had a friend who was spending about $85,000 a year on pay per click advertising and one day they just canceled his account.  It can happen to the best of us.

This is why you should look at other avenues to marketing your website then just doing it through SEO.  There are lots of pay per click advertising campaigns, newspaper or TV ads that you can do.  Sending mail outs to people can work if they are done right.  You can even pick up the phone and ask people if they know of anyone who is interested in the product or service that you are selling.

There are lots of things you can do.  I like to call this paid media.  They are called ad networks, exchanges and aggregators.  Type these phrases in to a search engine and they will come up for you.  What they do is sell left over advertisements to other people.  You put up your own banners and if you design a really good one you can do really well.  They have something like well over a billion pages you can get your stuff on.

This doesn’t include things like blogs, personal home pages or web 2.0 properties. These are well established businesses that have been around for a while that have extra advertising to sell.  You can get lots of traffic from these sources.  The over supply of traffic that you can get brings you great targeted traffic you won’t find anywhere else.
