Rob Kerry from Ayima – Gambling / Gaming SEO

The gaming world is probably the most competitive niche in SEO – esp poker and casinos.

There is no secret sauce as there used to be e.g. with old link networks being burned.  Rob shows a graph of search volume and est clickthrough

888 vs William Hill – #1 and #4 respectively. Both are fairly similar in optimisation terms, but what separates them is their backlinks.  Rob uses a similar process to Dave Naylor to rank links according to anchor text, class C IPs and other metrics like PR.

Once you’ve dominated a market – eg casino in UK, what about branching out to other countries -eg France. Use backlink comparisons to check out a few of the top ranked sites in France. The main conclusion is that you should always use a subfolder and not a subdomain because with a subdomain you are starting from scratch.  You can register a subfolder to a different country within Google Webmaster Tools – so do that.  Rob expanded on this more in the Q&A – it is much easier, quicker and cheaper to use a subfolder on a generic TLD to rank for really competitive keyphrases in different countries, compared with building up authority from scratch on different (sub)domains.

My summary:

This was an excellent session as expected with such top class speakers, all so experienced that if you let them talk for any amount of time there’s going to be valuable stuff for anybody who is into Search Engine Optimisation to soak up. The major problem is that with the timescale the speakers are receiving, they have to cram a shedload of great ideas into a few bullet points. It’s so easy to get lost with all this information and for it to go in one ear and out the other! Needless to say I’ll be checking out the slides when they’re released and chatting to the speakers in the pub if possible!

I’m not sure what the next big conference will be about, hopefully they will have one dedicated solely to Web Design in the not too distant future.

Richard Baxter from SEOGadget – Travel SEO

How people search for flights in the UK

There are 6 main categories of keywords in terms of flights:

- generic (flights, cheap flights)

- destination (eg “flights to new york”)

- routes – v important (eg “flights from london to new york”) look at all the different variations eg “london to paris” is different to “paris to london”. Less competitive route based keywords are of course easier to target, mainly because not many people optimise for them.

- Brand (”easyjet flights”)

- Departure (eg “flights  from manchester”)

Take your keyword lists and put all variations into Google Keyword tool – over a large scale of iterations you end up with a huge target long tail graph.

Then you can play around with new longtail variations of different types of keywords eg “cheap easyjet flights from Gatwick to Malaga”

How this translates into site architecture

You can map each ‘type’ of keyword against different levels of your sitemap architecture – eg hompage -> generic,

Site indexation issues

The problem with mapping out this kind of country based architecture is that you end up siloing pagerank down through your main destinations but there are ‘neighbour’ countries/categories that dont have much juice. The way around this is by using crosslinking (similar/most popular/nearby/recently reviewed suggestions) and use the trick of flattening your site design.  Also learn from bloggers – use tagging as a way to spread internal juice to pages that don’t traditionally get power.

Analysing competitiveness and competitor linkbuilding strategies

Richard pimped out Open Site Explorer to show how you can look at competitor backlinks. As a great example Kayak tools such as Top Pages on Domain are really useful for finding out about things they have had success with.

Phew! That was amazing – years of experience at CheapFlights condensed down into less than 20 minutes!

Make sure your Search Engine Optimisation is set up correctly. Any Web Design company worth their salt will advise you on the best methods

Dave Naylor from Bronco on Competitor Analysis

Dave starts with the importance of understanding your niche – we can’t dive in like an in-house SEO but we can get a snapshot.  He talks about Touchgraph to give you a quick idea, and also looking at which competitors rank. But the latter can be plugged into one of Dave’s tools (free to use) for data and keyword mining -> repeat and rinse till you have a massive keyword list.  Then analyse the data. Nowadays rather than using Google’s keyword tool Bronco have an in-house tool which compares traffic, ranking, click through, PPC data – this can give you an idea of what you can get out of ranking for which specific SERP positions.  This is checked on a monthly basis. This produces a visibility / opportunity ’score’. Access to the tool that Dave is showing us would be fantastic, and I will definitely be speaking to Dave about this!

The next stage of analysing this data is mining all of the backlinks of the same competitors – using a range of sources including Yahoo, Majestic, Linkscape and his own index.

Dave on the fact that Bronco are a small boutique “We’re like the SAS” – small, specialist and targeted :)

Allan Stewart from FireflySEO on Recruitment SEO

Allan is going to focus on the “candidate” side (rather than recruiter side) of a Recruitment site.

Ranking for company names is an important strategy – e.g. recruiter brand names.

Split between pre-defined content pages is 40%, where as 60% comes to search result pages, i.e. the long tail. The majority of people noindex their search result pages, but to a certain extent you should try to make them crawlable.  The problem with this comes with the practice of sites “rolling back” to the parent category where there are no search results – this can obviously lead to a lot of duplicate content issues.

A short while ago, Fresh Egg were asked to attend the ‘Make it into Media’ event which was taking place at the amazing Corn Exchange venue in Brighton, East Sussex and had been organised by Wired Sussex.  The event featured media firms from all over Sussex and although it wasn’t an actual jobs fair, it was a place where anybody who wanted a bit of advice about the industry could come and visit and maybe pick up a few contacts and future leads.

The HR manager Annie Marshall and I set up a stand at the event and about midway through the day I took to the stage to give a presentation on how I got into Search Engine Optimisation and to give my advice on the best paths into the industry.

The East Sussex town of Brighton is very well known for it’s large number of creative and media talent gurus.   We were expecting a lot, but both myself and Annie were absolutely stunned by the enthusiasm and energy that all the attendees showed.  Most of the attendees were graduates and students who were interested in breaking into the media business, however there was a scattering of older industry professionals, many of whom were just that little bit curious about ‘new media’, but others were looking to make the transition from print to digiral.

What stood out for me the most however was just how hungry many of the job seekers were, and how hard they were working to either get a foot in the door or establish themselves in a new media sphere.    Almost instantly after the doors were opened, the Fresh Egg stand was swamped by people wanting to learn not only more about our company, but also about Web Design, SEO, digital development and our fantastic new hatchling CallTrackID™ The interest didn’t let up all morning and it was a very constructive day, not only for Fresh Egg, but for everyone else involved in the whole event.

This is always frustrating for people eager to launch their new website… If you’ve designed sites before, i’m sure you’ll recognise the Google ‘Submit URL’ page:. Our first bit of advice is… leave it alone!! Using the method described below you can fast-track the site indexing process to just days, even hours!

If you’ve used it before, you’ll know that Google can take anything from 3 weeks to 2 months to get round to crawling your new website, which is a long time if you’re keen to build up the hits.

Well you needn’t wait that long… in fact just to prove this technique works I tested it on a new website and was indexed by Google in under 10 hours!!!

The idea is very straighforward. There are multitudes of sites out there that are indexed daily due to them having high-quality content and that all important Google PR ranking. The idea is to get them to link to your website! Consider this… Google’s spiders crawl through sites, jumping from link to link to find new content, so if they discover a new link to your site they’ll find it faster!

There are various ways to do this.. and you don’t even have to aim too high when it comes to Google Page Rank. To take our demo site as an example… I placed a link on 1 x PR4 website, 2 x Google Page Rank 3 sites and 4 x Google Page Rank 2 sites and was indexed in under 24 hours! Admittedly i’m lucky enough to own these sites, so placing a link on them was easy, but you understand the process.

To find High Ranking PR sites I use and recommend downloading the Google Toolbar which can be found here.

So… some easy ways to get some reasonably high PR links for free would be to find a list of free link exchanges (ideally with a PR rating over 2), the simple process of emailing backlink requests and posting on popular blogs including your link in your signature.

Utilising these techniques alone should be enough to fast-track your inclusion in Google. However you can also pay for a link on a high PR web directory (which could be around £50/$90 for a month) which will get you noticed quickly (you can cancel your membership once listed) but i’m trying to save some money for you!

So get to it… you just need high PR backlinks to your site and you’ll be indexed in double-quck time! The Next step is SEO Optimisation

If you are a webmaster then you might have heard this bantered around quite often and you might have some idea of what it is. If you are not actively involved in your website or have had little exposure to the Internet then you probably have very little understanding of what SEO actually is. Your current knowledge level is not really an issue as SEO is something that very few people have chosen to learn and up skill themselves in. While it is not common knowledge and you are willing to learn there is a competitive edge that you can exploit.  It means with some small modifications to your website that you can achieve higher results in search engines than your lesser search engine marketing savvy competitors.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 1: Identifying Keywords and Key phrases
This step sets the scene for the web page we are about to optimise. We need to do some research using keyword tools, like Google Adwords and Overture Inventory keyword tools. Using these two tools we can input our main term used on the current page we are trying to optimise. We should record the results from these and then order by search volume. We then weed out any irrelevant terms and are left with a list of highly searched and highly relevant terms to this page.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 2: Titles
It is common opinion among SEO professionals that the Title of a webpage is THE single most important SEO aspect of a webpage. The title of the webpage is the first thing a search engine views and tries to interpret. It is vital to ensure that the title is unique across your whole website and that it is highly related and relevant to the content of the webpage. We like to use between 4-10 words in the title tag and we always use the leftward rule. Leftward rule is where the most important words are closer to the left. In this case, the most highly searched on terms we identified in SEO technique 1.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 3: Duplicating Web Page Content
Often websites reproduce information that is copied from other websites. This is a very bad thing to do and search engines are so smart now that they check to duplicated content both within the same website and across all websites pages within their index. It is very important to ensure your website has unique content across the whole Internet. You can write unique articles or howto’s or you can find someone who will write unique content for you. If you currently find that a lot of your pages are listed in the supplemental index on Google then making sure the titles, descriptions, meta keywords and all of your on page content is unique is how you would pull them out of the supplemental index.

Organic SEO somewhat reduces the “effluence” on the Internet to a bare minimum, thus you help clean the virtual environment to a certain extent as well!. You will discover in the paragraphs that follow, a few easy methods that can be used to employ this kind of search engine optimization. Sure enough, you are aware of the fundamentals of search engine optimization, yet are you conversant with SEO organic techniques?

Although the significance of search engine optimization to the promotional strategy of any business cannot be undermined, fact is that it’s turning out to be progressively more uniform and computerized. Just rehashing a similar essential plan is what plenty of SEO services and applications do to boost the search engine rankings of a website. This has contributed to a great number of marketers resorting to awful search engine optimization means in their pursuit of results. These methods may be effective in producing traffic, but in due course they turn the Internet into an appalling place. It is clearly awful to practice these methods, also eminent as “Black Hat” SEO methods. In addition to annoying would be customers of your web site, there is no guarantee that they will always get results…

You see, Google and other search engines are constantly looking for ways to defeat Black Hat SEO techniques. The time and money exhausted by you will be of no use if their labors bear fruit – and frankly that may happen sooner than imagined. It is futile to fritter money on search engine optimization that may perhaps be worthless in a couple of months. The situation has aggravated to the extent that in addition to being degraded in terms of ranking, this category of sites are being wholly taken off the search results.

Cost effective labor or automated machines are employed by some of these Black Hat methods to complete diverse errands. An illustration would be when these services now and again sign up to lots of forums and/or social networking sites and just spam the link to any potential site. Sites cluttered with meaningless links are a distinct source of irritation for multiple webmasters.

Link farms are another common type of Black Hat SEO. The sites are a copy of licit online listings, and are piled with links, which may guide you to really pitiful web sites. The reason that users get confused in a vast amount of unusable information is the to and fro linking between some of them and the link site. SEO organic techniques can be a great alternative to some of these Black Hat search engine optimization plans. Domain names are the foremost connection that people make with websites. Domain names that feature the keywords that your website is targeting are a great start to organic SEO. An additional, linked, plan for search engine optimization is to make the same change in your web site’s title: adapt it to contain the keywords being targeted. Search engines make use of both of these elements as criteria when ranking a site.

The methods available to optimize a site with an SEO organic strategy are many; however these hints will help you begin.
