I have registered with several different social sites including Facebook. These are great source for marketing and developing leads for my network marketing business. However, I’ve learned, to effectively use these sites to network you must understand the psychology of attraction. Let me explain.

One thing that amazes me is how often people will send messages to my inbox, or post on my wall something about a great MLM opportunity they have. This is before they have even introduced themselves. I know you know who these people are, it may have even been you at one time.

However, these websites will have their corresponding advantages and disadvantages. You must weigh them first, before you are going to immerse yourself in such websites.

The advantages:

1. Very easy to check on these websites.

These websites are very user friendly. If you are going to find a person, you can just type his name on that box, and in a few minutes, you will reap your search results. But if you are going to use his email address as your starting point, then you will only have one search result.

Here is a question for you, would you ever propose or accept a proposal for marriage on a first date? That’s a rhetorical question because we all know the answer, at least I hope so. Also think about the one liner dudes that go up to a girl and say something corny like, “What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?” Yeah, real smooth.

Then why would someone use similar methods to attract people to their business. When people are considering getting involved in a serious relationship, consciously or unconsciously they want to know, what does this person have to offer me? How can they enhance my life?

The disadvantages:

1. Fraudulent information.

When you are going to search one person, you might be shocked why there are a lot of accounts about that person (especially if he’s a celebrity.) You might even think how in the world can he manage 25 user accounts. With this, there are several fake user accounts in these websites. Now, you do not want a poser, or an imitation, right?

Users had a new demand – they wanted to be able to use special characters and symbols to represent their emotions, and they wanted to use them across a wide variety of platforms and software. It was at this time that the public realised that what they in fact wanted had been there all along, in the form of MSN symbols.

These special characters were already installed in the character maps of windows users, and had been ever since they first installed Windows. Special images which could be copied and pasted just like normal letters into word documents, Facebook statuses, onto MySpace pages and most importantly, they could be used in MSN chat, usernames and statuses. The MSN heart symbol, music notes and stars found that their simplicity had once again made them in hot demand – and people began using symbols for MSN more and more due to the fact that they could be used anywhere and were not tied to one product, like custom emoticons.

What will the next step be in the history of the emote? We will wait and see, but for now the uncrowned king of the graphical emotional representation is surely – the MSN symbol! you can be published without charge. Facebook has become a universal fetish for teens, college students, moms, dads, business people, musicians, artists, baby boomers, grandmas and grandpas…there is no limit to the reach of Facebook.  Frightening?

You Are NOT A Guru
Twitter gives you a little bio area where you can put some info down about yourself, your biz, etc. I’ve come across all kinds of bios – from the short and sweet to the funny to the weird. But what really grates on my nerves is when people call themselves a “guru” or something along those lines.

Trust me, you are NOT a guru. You are a regular person with a Twitter account. Calling yourself a deity makes you look kind of obnoxious and cheesy.

In case you missed the memo, a person wants to do business with someone they like. Not the person who does a great impersonation of a 70s used car salesman.

Just be real. You’ll make a lot more friends that way. And that will improve your business.

Twitter Is NOT Your Ad Feed
If you follow me, I will get a little email from Twitter letting me know. I’ll look at your Twitter page and see if I want to follow you back. If all I see are notices about the things you just listed in your Etsy shop or some other similar type of ad, I’m not going to follow you back.

Not trying to be mean, here, but I am not interested in reading your personal ad feed. And neither is anyone else….

Twitter, like all social networking sites, does require a bit of the “social” to be considered effective. So get with the conversation – you might even make a new friend or two.

What’s Up With That Welcome Message?
Another thing I find kind of irritating (and so do other people) is to get a message saying “Thanks for following, now go to my website and buy something.” Okay – maybe they don’t actually say “buy something,” but that’s what they’re implying by sending that message!

Traditionalists may be leery of social marketing because it does not afford them control they are used to when compared to more traditional forms of marketing. However, by relinquishing this control and moving away from highly-directed ad campaigns, marketing through social media allows the development of two-way communication (between you and consumers), build an influential community and subsequently generate buzz around your product or service. At the very least, the very presence of social marketing and its potential for widespread global influence is reason enough for traditional marketing to change its approach, e.g. listening more to what people want instead of merely pushing something on them.

If, however, I get a follow notice from someone who’s last update was in 2008, I’m not likely to follow back. I mean, you got onto Twitter to follow me, so why not update the darn thing?

But Please, Don’t Overshare
Have you ever been to the bar and had a total stranger sit by you and start telling you way too much information? Sometimes people do that on Twitter, too. (I don’t know if they’re drinking while oversharing, but it might be linked…)

And while I do think that people need to actually Tweet every so often, I don’t want to know too much about your life. And you should always be careful about what you put on the web because it’s all indexed and can easily be searched upon
