Many companies opt for a mini-site to promote a particular service or product within its business niche.  If your business hopes to generate greater value from the small site over the long term, you will need to obtain a high number of external links.  Small sites lack the advantage of very large sites with hundreds of pages providing internal links within the site pointing toward the most important pages.

You should use all available opportunities to obtain high quality external links, including directory listing, hiring a SEO consulting firm and using social media for its viral features.  However, I want to concentrate your attention toward one of the most important of the external link building alternatives, article syndication.

There are several ways in which article marketing can improve your SEO.  The first is that the links will be found by the search robots on a variety of websites.  Assuming that those websites are located on unique IP addresses, this is very helpful because of the algorithms that the search engines use to determine their results listings.  Next, with content syndication, unlike some other methods of getting external links, you get to decide the exact anchor (linking) text for each link.  Third, article marketing is relatively inexpensive and easy when compared to some of the other ways of obtaining quality links.  The ease of the process can be largely attributed to the introduction of specific software for article marketing.

I am able to be very productive in my article distribution, but only because I maintain memberships in two different article marketing systems.  My approach is to write ten to fiften fresh articles each week.  I spin each of those to obtain hundreds of unique versions for distributions to article directories (in one system) and to individual websites (in the other system).  I use different articles for each system, to further reduce the chances for any content duplication.

One of the sites of which I am a member provides a free article spinner, available to anyone.  You may also register to use an automated submission service that is linked to the spinner.  It sends a unique version of your article to up to hundreds of different article directories.  When you first register to use the always free spinner, you can get a free trial offer to use the distribution part of the software.  There is a membership fee associated with the distribution system after the trial period ends.

The other system to which I have a membership also provides a linked spinning and distribution.  The important difference with this system is that, rather than distributing unique versions of the article to directories, those article are spun and the distributed directly to websites

I maintain memberships in both, because both have their distinct advantages.  However, I can belong to both for a monthly fee that is less than I pay for a decent dinner for two in my home town.  Consequently, a combination of the two is what I would recommend for use in the SEO efforts for your mini-sites, with an added benefit of almost immediately increasing traffic.

When we spend our money on article marketing, we concentrate on two things: 1) Cleverly enticing the readers of our brilliant prose to visit our business’s website; 2) doing a bit of search engine optimization for the page on our website to which we link.  We naturally want to get the most for our money that we spend on article writing and distribution.  Particularly when we outsource to a betterweb writing service, we want to make sure that we do more than merely recover our investment.  That hope is understandable, but is it wise in the long term?

Sometimes our enthusiasm for generating external links to our website’s pages and our hopes that our readers will take the bait and click through to our site gets in the way of a rather important detail.  For our articles to be truly effective, they need to be found by readers and considered worthy by the search engine algorithms.

Face facts, our new article isn’t the only one being posted on EzineArticles or GoArticles on any given day.  Indeed, it probably isn’t even the only article being posted that day that deals with our topic, although nobody has written as cleverly as we have of course.  So how do we insure that our article rises to the attention of the readership above all of that clearly inferior competition?

Yeah, I know the standard writing and submission tips:

*  Use a descriptive title and, if possible, make it “catchy.”
*  Tag the article with keywords that are popular and that are actually used in the article.
*  If the article directory offers and opportunity to provide your own synopsis (as does EzineArticles), spend the time to write in well and make it inviting.

All of those tips are important; none should be ignored.  What we really need, though, is for the search engines to give our articles some much deserved respect.  After all, most of our potential readers will find our article by means of a search engine.  Only then can they be emotionally moved by our prose.  Only then will they follow the link to our site.  Only then will they repeated buy our product and service.  Only then will we become as wealthy as King Midas as we sit around in our pajamas, working from home only fifteen minutes a day.  Okay, I got carried away a bit by the marketing hype.  I offer you my sincere regrets for getting carried away.

How do we really earn respect from the search engines for our articles?  External links.  Lots and lots of external links.  How do we get those wonderful external links?  Well, we either sit back and wait for them to magically appear, or…

We have to actively assign a part of our article marketing plan to building links for our articles, themselves.  Granted that will reduce the number of links we have the time to provide for our business’s site, but the trade is that linking to our articles that do lead to our site become more powerful.

You can settle on your own ratio, but most of us should probably assign about 20% to 35% of our article marketing content to providing external links directly to our previously published articles.  For example, every once in a while, submit content to A1Articles that contains links to some of your content on EzineArticles and EverydayArticles.  Use an EzineArticles article to link directly to a master work that have have posted to ArticleVista.

If this sounds as if it might complicate your record keeping and your approach to writing, you’re right!  Consequently, many Internet marketers outsource all of this to a well trained company that really understands writing, submissions, keywords and search engine optimization.  That outsourcing approach leave us plenty of time to sit around home in our pajamas counting our money.

The amount of time, energy and talent that goes into creating content for an online marketer’s article marketing and distribution convinces some to contract with a writing and spinning professional. I recognize that other marketers prefer to do their the writing themselves, so I offer these suggestions to better maximize the return on the investment of time.

* Set aside time every week to write articles for distribution. This is usually a several hours during the weekend and possibly a couple of hours each working week depending upon my schedule. With other writing commitments including my website, this sometimes is quite a stretch for me.

* Create an easy format that you can easily copy and paste your efforts into those sites where you regularly contribute. Record the following: (1) A title that meets the site’s policies such as www.ezinearticles.com of 100 characters (2) Word Count (3) Copyright Statement (4) Bio or Signature statement that meets the character guidelines (1101 for Ezine Articles) (5) key words (100 characters for Ezine Articles) (6) A table for key words to be used within the article and as search words.

The table is probably the most beneficial element within this format. As I write the article, I plug in phrases that I believe have high key word value. The table can be easily copied and pasted into a new article with similar key words. These key words then can be prioritized from highest to lowest and used as the keywords within the article submission site. By using the highlight tool, I can quickly determine what words are used within the article’s content.

* Write from your own personal experience and avoid the “Royal ‘We.’” Many people use the web to locate answers to their questions, so your personal experiences actually lend credibility. Share your failures and successes while you are demonstrating your expertise. In your articles, don’t be too concerned with selling; just begin to build a relationship with your readers in order to gradually convert them into customers. Also include some humor if possible. Leave them wanting more, as the old show business cliche goes. After all, you want them to click your link to end up on your website.

* When you choose a topic, rely on your keyword research to direct you. I try to keep my articles between 400 and 800 words depending upon the topic or subject.

* After writing your article, review the content and begin to actively search for words or phrases that will increase the “hits” to your articles. Many times I believe I have an incredibly great title. By using a key word search, I can truly learn if the title is extraordinary or just plain ordinary. For example, in a recent article I had planned to use the phrase “bulls eye” in the title. As I am a very visual individual, this word conjured up an arrow hitting a target. Inventory overture revealed 3,190 searches for “bulls eye” while the word “target” had 1,814,599. My next action was to quickly change the title to maximize this key word

In MS Word, under the Edit Button, you can scroll down to Find and enter each key word to determine if that word or phrase is included within your article. With Search Engine Optimization (SEO), using the right amount of key words is also important. An overload of key words is just as harmful as not enough key words. My strategy is to identify 20 top key words for every article and incorporate them at least one time and not more than three times into the article..

Hopefully, these strategies will not only improve your Internet marketing through increased traffic to your web site, but will also improve the quality of your articles and potentially start to build those relationships with future customers or clients.
