To start an online business, you have to be smart, and being smart deals with keyword research. If you pass up keyword research in the beginning, you will find yourself passing up a lot of cash.

Many webmasters that eventually fail after a short amount of time recommend using long tail keywords. If you want to rank well and make money, then long tail keywords may actually waste your time. Next, I do a search in the search engine for the keywords that get good search traffic. I then use Yahoo Site explorer to analyze the number one ranked websites and their backlinks. After analyzing, I check to see how many backlinks they have and what the anchor text is.

If the website does not have the keyword in their links, then I know that the website owner is clueless. With relevant backlinks and patience, I will easily be able to get the number one spot for that certain keyword.

Most people think it’s going to be much harder than it really is to rank well. You have to take into consideration that many webmasters know nothing about search engine optimization and are lucky to be ranking well. If you find keywords where website owners aren’t doing good optimization, you have a good chance of taking their spot and making money.
